OIOpublisher V2 launched

Posted by admin On September - 30 - 2008

The best private advertising platform or OIOPublisher for short :p has reached version 2. This new version comes along with a new designed website, that in my opinion kicks ass!

The price and the continued support and development makes the wordpress plugin the best investment you can ever make in your blog.

What’s new in version 2.0

There are several new tweaks in this version but these are the ones worth

  • Now you can integrate OIOpublisher in any website that uses php. :)
  • Template driven purchase page;
  • Full Javascript support;
  • Ability to pay with Entrecard Credits!

As you can see, buying ads with entrecard is now an option. Probably many of you are happy with it and will happily embrace it but, i will do some research first to see if it is sustainable to sell ads here with entrecard credits.

If you were thinking in getting this plugin, do yourself a favour. Don’t think anymore. Just buy it. Trust me. You won’t regret having OIOPublisher do the work for you ;)

Monday Link Love

Posted by admin On September - 29 - 2008

Another Monday Link Love. This is getting an habit lool.

I got drunk yesterday (it was the annual festivity at my home town), so this is not a very good day to me…. lol

Week in Review

I decided to not make any plans. I was planning several things to be done last week but as usual i haven’t done them. Shame on me.

Last week posts that are worth reading on my blog are the 6th part of the Creating a forum series (i hope to finish them soon) and the Myth about duplicate content.

Link Love of the week:

Sire from wassupblog tells you how to deal with rude an obnoxious commentators.

Syed from Balkhis shows a good sense of opportunity and takes advantage of the US (world) Crisis because of the banking mistakes, and gives you a guide to enjoy the terrible economy.

Following the same subject, Adam at Bulkish Bankers wrote this article.

Did you know that Entrecard was for sale? And then it wasn’t? Here is a little insight at DatMoney.

Ganesh at BlogSmartly referred to the recent Google Page Rank update. It seems that i have the same rank (2) which i think with my almost 8000 10000 backlinks is a bit low. A PR 3 would be more appropriate (has i had it once). But who am i to say this… lol

And finally Scot from Revvenue is launching a toolbox to make our life’s better, and he has just released  a sneak peak. Go check it out.

Thoughts

Life is not easy to me lately (well it never was), i have several ideas to put into practice but several personal matters are driving my attention away from them. I can tell you that one of the things that is driving my attention away is my next internship in an Emergency Room… i must say that i am a bit scared, mainly because the responsable teacher gives me the creeps… Any way. I was thinking and  found that with all these things messing my head the pleasure i had blogging was fading away… Never thought this could happen but it did…..

Creating a forum Part 6 - Monetizing the forum

Posted by admin On September - 24 - 2008

This is probably one of the “creating a forum” series post that may interest you the most.

We are always seeking ways to monetize our sites, and perhaps the majority of us know how to monetize a blog, but when trying to do it in forums, they often stumble with some doubts and difficulties.

Making money with blogs is easier

One point you need to take in consideration is that blogs are easier to monetize. You will get some revenue after a few days of work, but with forums it is a completly different thing. The process is more demanding and will require more attention from you. The process can sometimes be frustrating to us, so be patient.

Analyse your options

You need to think how do you want to make money from your forum. There are several options out there, some may result very well, others may not. What works well for your blogs may not work for a forum.

So let’s see what options we have:

  1. Pay per click ads: This is the obvious option for the majority of webmasters. PPC ads can work pretty well on forums, but to achieve that you will need try several types of ads and spots.
  2. CPM ads: this is an option that ALL webmasters should take in consideration. CPM ads are a great way to monetize your forum, but they are only good if you have some decent traffic. Take my example (dahh.net) I have CPM ads, every new visit brings me money. It isn’t much but it add’s up. As a bonus, from time to time i have conversions that bring me an extra buck or five ;). CPM ads, in my opinion should be only used as a secondary source of income.
  3. Pop Ups: these type of ads usually pays on a CPM base, and they pay better than the ordinay cpm ad, but it will annoy your visitor, so this is a type of ad that i don’t recommend, unless you have a more “obscure” forum.
  4. Paid subscriptions: You may charge your members for special access to certain foruns or to change their rights. This is a good option if you offer some services like PPC training, secret tips, special content like many adult foruns have.  SMF 2.0 is able to do this easily.
  5. Email Marketing: This can bring you more profit than all others combined. Imagine the value that email marketing can have in your life. Gathering an email database that you can control is priceless. If you can have a couple of thousand users in your forum, you will have a gold mine! You just need to select the right “pay per lead” campaigns to send in a mass email. Imagine the potential! This is by far my favourite one. You just need to remind that you need to disclose that you will send advertising offers from time to time directly to their email.

Ad Management

This is all very pretty to talk about, but not if we don’t have an easy way to implement the ads. Doing Email marketing and paid subscriptions is easy because those features are already present in SMF. but placing banner ads in the forum is a different issue. You need to edit the code to insert your banners. But fortunately there is a mod called “Ad Management” that will make your life really easy.

You can get ad management mod on SMF mod site. Just upload and activate it through the package manager. If you are using the Default theme then you don’t need to edit the template files.

In your admin panel go to “Ad management” inside “Forum Configuration” section. Click on Add Ads and insert the code. Then just choose where you want the ads to appear. It is that simple.

I have not told everything about Forum monetization. There are several useful tips that i can share with you, but i will leave that to the e-book i will write after completing this series of posts. It will be Free for Rss subscribers.

Final Considerations

As i have said, monetizing a blog is easier than a forum. In fact, forum monetization can be a challenge. It took me some time to monetize dahh.net, but my patience paid off.

There are some factors that could potentially make this easier. I recommend you to make a forum in English. The potential of users is incredibly big, and it will be more likely to bring you new users, specially users from US, that usually convert very well.

Look for valid alternative. Don’t bee afraid to try new advertising companies. Some may result better than others. For example, if you have a tech forum probably tech related ads (like widgetbucks) will generate more revenue.

Be patient. You won’t make a decent buck in a week, or in a month (unless you are a particularly skillful lucky marketeer). It took me two years to successfully monetize my forum, but to reach that level i had to do many mistakes, some very stupid…. But i was learning from scratch and monetizing the forum wasn’t my main objective. And it still isn’t.

Schumacher Custom Homes

Posted by admin On September - 24 - 2008

What? Who? Schumacher custom Homes? lol I have to admit that when i saw this website for review i thought immediately on Michael Schumacher (the ex Formula 1 driver). For a second, i thought that he opened a new business.

Let’s head to the point. The subject of this review is Schumacher Custom Homes. A company established in the USA that makes custom homes. They are established in several east states, so if you are interested in getting your dream home make sure you visit their site to see if the are near you.

Schumacher Homes website is fairly simple and easy to use. It does what it is supposed to. All the info necessary about this business is present and at a distance of a simple click, which is hard to accomplish.

One thing that i like, and one of the best ways to promote our product is to show our best products, and i have to say, that the images they display on their site are quite impressive. There are some really beautiful houses on their portfolio.

An aspect i don’t like on the site is the green theme. A bit too dark for my taste.

Duplicate content penalty

Posted by admin On September - 22 - 2008

Duplicate content is always a subject that interests us, because we (webmasters) are afraid of it. We are afraid to get our content duplicated, we are afraid to get caught by google for duplicate content either by articles that we get from an article site of for having duplicate content on our own websites.

Copyscape

I have mentioned before an excellent tool to seek for duplicate content that is called Copyscape. I used it every time i write an article, or every time a change the article structure. It only gives me 10 results but that is more than enough.

And im here again recommending it.

The myth about duplicate content

One  of the worst nightmares that a webmaster can have is being penalized by having duplicate content. At least most of us think that way.

You probably looked for ways to avoid the duplicate content on you website. You probably read somewhere that a good way to avoid this in your blog is to have excerpts in your front page instead of full posts. Or you are worried about having multiple addresses going to the same place like: mydomain.com/myproduct and mydomain.com/myproduct&white.

Recently google made an interesting article regarding duplicate content, and they say there is no duplicate content penalty at least in the way we usually mention it.

Duplicating content from other websites: sure, you will get a penalty;

Getting your articles scrapped from other website: google says they can identify the original content fairly easy, so no worries here…. hum…

Having duplicate content on your own site: there is no problem unless google detects it is intended to deceive search engines.

Final Consideration

While having duplicate content in your site won’t get you a penalty, it will affect your site’s performance. Google bot will spend more bandwidth while crawling your website and we know how much bandwidth google bot can eat!!!!

The next time you see someone saying that you will get penalized for having duplicate content on you own site then send them to this page, where i have taken information to write this article.
