Markus Lattner

Markus Lattner believes that when done correctly, fresh baked bread can be artistry. The agriculture improvement specialist recalls fondly the trips he and his cousins would make by bike at three in the morning as children. They’d bike all the way to the nearest bakery in his Austrian hometown and load up on hot bread, straight out of the oven. As an adult, Markus Lattner has spent years trying to recapture the delicious, melt-in-your-mouth taste of that early baked bread.

Today, Markus Lattner is still on an eternal search for the bread he loved so much as a child. Markus Lattner spoke to Blogger Venue about what makes him so passionate about fresh baked bread.

Blogger Venue: Thanks for speaking with us today. Have you found any great bakeries in America? Perhaps in some of the larger cities?

Markus Lattner: Today’s American bakeries tend to mass-produce baked goods, especially in big cities where true chefs create baked masterpieces. While that’s great, there’s nothing like personally created concoctions straight out of the oven.

Blogger Venue: Do you still believe that Austria has the best bread?

Markus Lattner: I haven’t sampled all the bread in the world, of course, but I’ve yet to find anything that beats walking into an Austrian bakery.

Blogger Venue: You also tried your hand at making your own, right?

Markus Lattner: Encouraged by my wife, I gave it a try. I didn’t do so well, at first.

Blogger Venue: It didn’t turn out so well? What went wrong?

Markus Lattner: I wasn’t sure at first. But I kept trying over the years and one day, I got it right.

Blogger Venue: What did you do differently that time?

Markus Lattner: I was going through a rough time, so I started baking as a stress relief.

Blogger Venue: And this was when you got it right?

Markus Lattner: I finally seemed to start accomplishing what I’d been trying. My wife had a theory about why I was successful.

Blogger Venue: Why was that?

Markus Lattner: It was the difficult time, we think. I was putting my heart and soul into baking, which I’ve found makes all the difference with master chefs.

Blogger Venue: Did you seek help along the way?

Markus Lattner: There’s a book called Bread, which was written by King Arthur Flour Master Baker Jeffrey Hamelman. It was very helpful. But I still believe strongly the lesson my mother taught me growing up. In fact, I think if anyone really set their minds to doing something, they can succeed, especially if they put heart into it.

Theodore Stroukoff

Theodore Stroukoff’s travel nursing work has taken him to a many different locations, allowing him to experience a variety of nursing environments. The experience has helped him grow as a nurse and offered him opportunities to see the world. For those interested in embarking on a career in travel nursing, but who are unsure about where to start, Theodore Stroukoff offers a few tips.

Some areas of the United States are experiencing a severe shortage of nurses, according to Theodore Stroukoff. Utilizing recruiting companies, medical facilities will attempt to fill these shortages with qualified personnel from other locations. These jobs can pay well, Theodore Stroukoff points out, which creates an incentive for some nurses. In fact, a nurse may choose to go into travel nursing in order to live in a different area of the country or, as in the case of Theodore Stroukoff, to grow in his or her chosen career.

Travel nursing isn’t only for RNs. According to Theodore Stroukoff, LPNs and CNAs are also in demand for medical staffing companies. Many of these companies will allow a nurse to specify the area of the country in which he or she would prefer to work, Theodore Stroukoff informs, narrowing it down to either a specific city or a general region. However, as with any nursing field, the more education and higher level of certification a person has, the better the pay and opportunities will likely be.

In addition to one’s level of certification, a nurse will likely also be asked if he or she has any specialties. Theodore Stroukoff points out that the more flexible a nurse is, the more likely he or she will be called for a job. Certain areas of nursing are always in high demand, Theodore Stroukoff says, while others seem to have more interested candidates than there are jobs. Keep in mind that in areas where a nursing shortage currently exists, the shortage will likely be in areas that aren’t normally experiencing a constant influx of interested nurses.

Once you’re hired for a travel nursing position, you’ll begin the process of relocating. Theodore Stroukoff emphasizes that these jobs are only temporary contract position, usually ranging from one month to three months. However, Theodore Stroukoff states that if the assignment is in another country, a contract could be for a year or longer.

Sometimes housing is provided for travel nurses, but according to Theodore Stroukoff, it’s crucial to iron all of this out before taking the job. Even when housing is provided, you may be sharing it with others or living in a small studio apartment, reports Theodore Stroukoff.

Regardless, Theodore Stroukoff believes that the career of a travel nurse can be among the most rewarding and challenging in the field. If you love to travel and learn new things, Theodore Stroukoff urges you to give travel nursing a try.

BloggerVenue: Last year, Unilife completed a move into your new 165,000 square feet state-of-the art facility in York, Pennsylvania. How do you anticipate this impacting opportunities for Unilife in 2012?

Alan Shortall: Given projected demand for our products from some of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, we believe the building has already sent a very strong message to our pharmaceutical customers that we are a world-class business. Our office section, for example, has been designed to support our growth as we increase production, and begin to service multiple pharmaceutical and healthcare customers around the world.

I believe the design of the facility strikes the right balance between operational efficiency and cost-effective construction.

We have also sought to ensure the new facility meets the most stringent international requirements for primary drug containers. The site includes more than 20,000 square feet of class 7 and 8 cleanrooms, where environmental factors such as temperature, humidity and particulates will be tightly controlled. In total, we have 11 clean rooms at present, with the capacity to build more in line with the installation of additional assembly lines. To support the efficient flow of goods into, and out of our facility, we have built a 20,000 square foot warehouse with ten loading bays.

BloggerVenue: Alan Shortall, could you speak to the issue of keeping the Company efficient as you grow Uniife?

Alan Shortall: The Board and I are extremely focused on maintaining the highest levels of fiscal accountability. We take budget compliance extremely seriously, and I am pleased to have the support of our CFO and his team in this regard.

We have also implemented SAP – one of the world’s best enterprise resource planning systems. Traditionally, only big multinational companies have utilized SAP.  For example, 75% of Fortune 500 companies run their business using SAP.  But we must prepare for the future now.

BloggerVenue: What does SAP bring to the table?

Alan Shortall:  Implementation of SAP’s Enterprise Resource Planning system provides a necessary foundation to support our projected business growth.  Through the utilization of industry best practices, SAP will help us to streamline business processes, provide robust controls to support compliance to Sarbanes Oxley and FDA regulations, improve planning capabilities, and increase the overall transparency of our business. This will all help to facilitate robust decision-making, and cohesive strategic planning.

BloggerVenue: Regulatory and compliance issues are obviously a concern in the pharmaceutical industry. How is Unilife addressing those?

Alan Shortall: Unilife has developed a world-class Electronic Master Control system that allows us to operate our Quality procedures efficiently and effectively. Our procedures are designed to ensure compliance to ISO 13485, as well as a number of key pharmaceutical industry standards for primary drug containers. Unilife has successfully secured regulatory certifications for our Unitract 1mL syringes with the FDA in the U.S., as well as in Europe, Australia and Canada. We are also now well positioned to file our drug master file for the Unifill syringe with the FDA and other regulatory bodies around the world next year.

Paul Perito MD

According to Paul Perito MD a urinary tract infection may involve the urethra, bladder, ureters and kidneys and generally affects men of advanced age.

There are two basic types of urinary tract infection–lower tract and upper tract. Lower tract infections, says Paul Perito MD, include infection of the urethra and bladder. Usually these types of infections are caused by intestinal bacterium which enters through the urethra. Paul Perito MD also notes that certain microorganisms, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, may be spread through sexual contact. Unique to men is prostatitis, which is the sudden swelling of the prostate gland. Infections involving the ureters and the kidneys are called upper tract infections, explains Paul Perito MD.

According to Paul E. Perito, MD, a major risk factor for urinary tract infection in men is benign prostatic hyperplasia. Dr. Perito says that this condition restricts the bladder from releasing urine, which can trigger an infection by allowing bacteria to germinate. Men who practice anal sex and those who have not been circumcised may be prone to bladder inflammation, also called cystitis, notes Paul Perito MD.

There are a number of symptoms associated with urinary tract infections:

• Frequent night waking to urinate
• Tenderness localized to the area of the bladder
• Fever – Paul Perito MD points out that this can be with or without chills
• Upper back pain
• A burning feeling or pain while urinating

Additionally, Paul Perito MD says that adult bedwetting and foul-smelling or cloudy urine may also be indicative that a bladder infection is present.

Men are advised to seek counsel from their physicians if they suspect a urinary tract infection. Paul Perito MD explains that a urine sample will be collected during the physical exam and the doctor will diagnose a urinary tract infection based on laboratory findings of the sample. If the urine has elevated levels of white blood cells, a urinary tract infection is likely, says Paul Perito MD. Men may also undergo a rectal exam so that the doctor can assess the condition of the prostate gland. As urinary tract infections are rare in younger men, Paul Perito MD indicates that additional testing may be required in these patients to detect urinary system abnormalities that could lead to an infection.

Paul Perito MD maintains that, when treated effectively, the majority of urinary tract infections see an improvement within 48 hours. Unfortunately, the majority of UTIs in men may not be preventable. There are certain lifestyle changes, however, such as reducing caffeine intake, eliminating alcohol and practicing safe sex, that may reduce the chances of a UTI, concludes Paul Perito MD.

In a recent webcast with BloggerVenue, Dr. Paul E. Perito answered questions from a panel of physicians.

BloggerVenue: Can you tell us a little about what causes erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: The causes are manifold and truly anything that causes oxidative stress to the vessels of the penis. That would mean anything that is an inflammatory agent to the vessels of the penis can cause erectile dysfunction. This would include things like diabetes. Probably 10% of the patients I see have diabetes. Smokers… At least in Miami about 30% of my patients are smokers. They come in with severe erectile dysfunction. Hypertension…

BloggerVenue: So, any sort of oxidative stress to the vessels will lead to erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: Yes, and even some people whether or not they have an oxidative stress condition will wind up with erectile dysfunction because of vascular insufficiencies, meaning that there is something wrong with the veins.

BloggerVenue: Can you give us an example?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: For example, women have varicose veins. Men can have something similar to varicose veins in their penis. This may be genetic and they’ll show up in my office and this will be the first presentation of the vascular insufficiency in these patients.

BloggerVenue: Are there any hormone related issues that can cause erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: There’s also an endocrine related phenomenon, and those are usually quite rare, thanks to endocrinologists. These days I see less and less of that. Many patients have been taken care of by their primary care physician or an endocrinologist.

BloggerVenue: So what kind of the workup does a patient get before they embark on a treatment course?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: It’s interesting. I apparently do more implants than anyone in the world and one of the things I think leads to this incredible volume is that I give my patients objective-based evidence of why they have this problem. They come into the office and will get a testosterone level check if they have a low libido. They also get a good physical exam and a good history. But I think the most valuable test is a penile duplex study.

BloggerVenue: What exactly is that?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: This is a study that we are actually able to look at the arteries and veins of the penis.  I’ll be able to identify exactly where the problem is and be able to direct the patient to the different therapeutic modalities that are available.

BloggerVenue: What are the different treatment options?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: Unfortunately, it is a three-tiered system. And there is not much beyond that. Fortunately, all three tiers have high patient satisfaction. Everyone has heard of Viagra –it is a pill that allows the vessels of the penis to remain dilated. What we’re finding now, however, is that in people with severe erectile dysfunction, it does not work. There is, however, an enormous population where they are just reaching the point of erectile dysfunction where it is extremely helpful.

BloggerVenue: Is Viagra safe in all patients?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: It’s safe in most patients, except those that are using nitrates, meaning the sublingual tablets you use if you have cardiac pain.

BloggerVenue: And the second tier?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: The second tier would be injection therapy. It is an injection that you put in your penis every time you’re going to have sex. It’s a vasoactive substance which allows the vessels to dilate and this will work from 30 min. to four hours.

BloggerVenue: Does it hurt?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: No, it really does not hurt and when monitored by a urologist it’s extremely safe. The problem with injection therapy is that it has a high dropout rate. The dropout rate is about 80% over 18 months. It’s also very expensive.

BloggerVenue: You are known for penile implants; is this the final option for men with erectile dysfunction?

Dr. Paul E. Perito: Yes, the penile implant is the third tier and the last option for those with erectile dysfunction.
