Creating Mini sites - Case Study 9th day results

Posted by admin On January - 17 - 2008

It’s has been 9 days now since i created the wii-finder mini site in the Creating Mini sites series and it is time to do a short analysis.

I got wii-finder.info indexed by google in 2 days. But i failed to write articles fast and even now there is one page with no text on it.

Lets look at keyword ranking on google:

Wii Finder: Not ranked :(

Guitar hero for wii: Not ranked :(

Wii problems: Not ranked :(

wii console in stock: Not ranked :(

wii availability: Not ranked :(

Where to buy wii: Ranked 19 :)

I admit these results are poor. The main keywords i select haven’t been ranked yet on google. but i haven’t done any promotionand link building for the mini site except in this blog.

But, analysing the stats from google analytics i have received traffic from these keywords:

wii finder in store: Ranked 16th

guitar hero finder: Ranked 21st

guitar hero for the wii finder: ranked 5th

After seeying this i will do some changes on the Wii finder site.

As for earnings, the site has generated its first clicks. :)

Overall the results are satisfatory. I just have to spend some time to get better results.

Creating Mini sites - Part 3 - GTrends made easy

Posted by admin On January - 8 - 2008

It’s time to continue the Creating mini sites series, and i has i have said in Part 2 i will show you an easy way to chek if the keywords gathered are good to use on a mini site or not.

We learned how to use GTrends, but with this program that im going to mention, we will just use GTrends to collect “Long-Tail-Keywords“.

The software is called GTrends Made Easy or GTME for short. This software allows us to gather a list of keywords and after an analysis, display a table with the results from the keywords. This makes you see the volume of searches and the competition from all keywords at the same time. You can even narrow your search to match your criteria (like the one i mentioned in Part 2) This software is easy to install and use. Above all, it’s FREE! There’s an option to use Wordze API Key which is like GTrends but you pay for it. But the software doesn’t require you to have an Wordze Key :)

To see how does this work there’s a video to help you with.

To download the software visit benjamimmaker

We used in Gtrends the word Wii. I copied every keyword to GTME (you can copy and past to a text file and then copy altogether to the software), named the project and clicked search. After a while the results are ready and now i can see what keywords i will use on the mini site.

With my own criteria the keywords shown are:

nintendo wii release date
guitar hero for wii
wii console in stock
wii finder
wii availability
wii problems
where to buy a wii
buy wii console
where to buy wii
where to buy nintendo wii
copy wii games
dance dance revolution wii

After a quick look i decided to use wii-finder.info as the domain name. Now it is time to select a theme with 19pages and write some articles! :)

See the work in progress mini site. (i will be adding content latter today).

Again here are some options where and how you can host your mini sites:

Creating mini sites - Part 2 - Keyword Research

Posted by admin On January - 3 - 2008

Now, that you know what software I’ll use to create the mini site it is time to decide what niche to use.

Many of us tend to go directly to big paying keywords and very competitive keywords that will be extremely hard to rank good in search engines, like: Loans, Credid Card, Debt and so on. But this is a big mistake. I did this several times with poor results if any! Remember, if you rank well in search engines than you are halfway to make money!

So, how to find the right keywords for your site?

First of all you must thing in random words for example, and them use GTrends tool that generates up to 100 related keywords (from a word you input), and an estimate of their daily search volume.

You can try for example “panic”, “nairobi”, “salsa” or go to the dictionary and pick a word. For this example i will use a word that has a lot of competition. The word is “wii” related to Nintendo Wii. But you say: “what the hell? Wii must be a very competitive Keyword and he will use it?”

Yes. But only to find adequate keywords! ;)

You will see that the first keywords shown are very competitive. You can see this by clicking the graph icon on the right.

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

It is recommended to select keywords that have a google competition < 30000 sites and > 100 searches/day. The wii keyword has a competition of 201,000,000 which is extremely bad! But if you scroll down to the bottom page you will see that “wii console in stock” has 10,900 and over 160 searches. which it’s very good. You may consider creating a page relative to these keywords. But we want more. So look again and see more keywords that fit in the criteria.

After a quick look at the keywords i found:

  • buy wii console (the search volume is only 60 but has a low competition);
  • where to buy wii;
  • cheap wii (good one, and potentially used on the domain);
  • wii problems;

Remember: Search for keywords that have a low google competition and good amount of searches/day.

The values given are not rigid. Sometimes i find some keywords with a competition of 5000 with only 30 searches/day and i consider a good keyword. This will depend on your judgement.

In the next part of the Creating mini sites series i will show you a quick way to select good keywords using a special software created to facilitate our lives :)

Domain name - With dash or not?

Posted by admin On December - 29 - 2007

Often when we create a new site , mini-site or blog we want to get a name for it. And the best name to choose is a name that will have the keywords in it. Why? Because this will help with your SEO and search engine rankings. But how will you use the domain (or sub domain)? Will you use a alltogetherdomain.com or a all-together-domain.com?

Search engines can have trouble reading the domain keywords, however, Google says that it can split your words very well, but we can’t be so sure. So a little trick that i read about is to use google to find if your domain name will need to use dashes or not.

Enter google.com and write your keywords (in this case alltogetherdomain).

If you get a “Did you mean?” hint after the search, with your words split up, then you are safe to use it without the dashes. If nothing is said, then, you will have to use dashes.

Creating mini sites - Part 1 - Software to use

Posted by admin On December - 22 - 2007

Hello! As mentioned yesterday, im going to start a series of “how to create a mini site”. I have covered this subject a few times, and showed you how to create them using some scripts or software like Commonsense CMS, Rssmini 1.3, HyperVRE (which promised to be a great tool but in fact sucked).

I have 2 new tools to try out. But for now let’s stick with one. I really hope this new tool is way better than the previous ones. This tool takes in consideration that it helps you creating a mini site easy and fast, but it does not help you create the content. It’s up to you to create the content. Don’t fall in temptation to copy other site content and don’t use rss feed to fill you pages. Use your own created content, your own words.

So, what tool am i talking about?

19pages. Have you ever heard of it? It’s a software created by the guys at 45n5 that will help you deploy a mini site real easy, real fast!

So 19 pages? yeah, the software is limited to 20 pages and 19 articles. It’s a mini site…. it is not supposed to have many pages! :p

Here is a quick presentation of the software:

19 pages
So what’s good about it?

  1. It’s easy to install. Just upload to your host, edit the config.php file and there is no need for a database.
  2. It’s easy to use. You have only what you need for. A place to write your articles and a place to add tags.
  3. SEO friendly

All right now that we have a software to use, the next step is finding the niche mini site we want to use. And for that we need to do some keyword researching.

That, my friends, i’ll leave it for Creating mini sites - Part 2. Stay tuned ;)
