Creating a forum part 3 - Choosing a Theme to use

Posted by admin On August - 14 - 2008

After configuring our forum, the next step is choosing the right theme. One of the things that i like in SMF is the number of free and quality themes around and it is so easy to install them.

Now that you are looking for a theme, you must remind yourself that the majority of mods are configured to run on the Default SMF theme. IF you choose a different one to use, then you will need to do some edits in your theme files to make the mods work. Hopefully, SMF 2.0 final will take care of this for you (probably it won’t but im still hoping lol).

You can stick with the Default theme for a while. You will be alright. But we want to make things a bit more appealing.

Where can i find themes for my smf forum?

The first choice for you will be the Theme directory of SMF site. Almost every theme available is there.

There are however tons of sites offering free themes such as:

This is just to name a few.

So far, the one that i like the most and the one that made me earn more from adsense was the SoftMC Blue theme. This theme simply rocks!

Installing the Theme

Doing this couldn’t be easier. You just need to login to your administration area. Ht the Themes and Layout Configuration Link. On the bottom of the page you will see a button that allows you to browse for your downloaded theme. Choose it and then hit Install!

Then you need to choose the theme. On the same page you will see a field called “Define Theme to” - Just browse the list to choose the one you want.

There you have. As easy as 1-2-3. :)

Next part of this tutorial will be “getting new members to your forum” . I recommend you to subscribe my RSS feed if you haven’t done so ;)

Nice tutorial. I haven’t seen the first two parts, but I’m assuming you’re writing a tutorial for SMF. I personally prefer vB because it’s much more powerful, but SMF can be a good start for people with low budgets. ;)

    Keep up the good work!

yeah. the SMF choice was explained on the first part of the tutorial. ;) VB is powerful but for me SMF beats it.

  2. I also use and love SMF. I haven’t seen the SoftMC Blue theme, so thanks for the tip. Eagerly awaiting your next post on getting new members!
