Page Rank Update - How were you affected?

I arrived from weekend and one thing a noticed was that everybody talking about the new page rank update. I went to my sites to see a general decrease on all of them.

This blog went from PR3 to PR2. Well, at first impression i was a bit pissed about it, although i suspected this could happen. After all, it could be worse. I have to say that i think my fair rank should be PR3, although Jim from thenetfool.com thinks my PR2 isĀ appropriateĀ  :p

Now, i have some sites that curiously got a PR of 1! Well, it is surprising because i have never promoted them in anyway. There are no links pointing to them, but even so, they got a PR of 1… There must be something im not taking in consideration right?

With my page rank decrease it is time to think a bit, evaluate, and then take measures if needed.

So, in what way the new page rank as afected your sites?

Yeah it does suck, mines dropped as well from PR3 to PR2! But then again, running a website isn’t all about relying on PR… that’s just one small factor.

I actually wrote a post covering some of the other conventions which PR is based off of, while this is not absolute fact the top SEO experts worldwide agree it makes up more than 50% of the determining factors when considering a site’s page rank.

I really like the blog great theme and layout. If you keep doing what you are doing a PR3 will be easy. Try not to focus on back links and stay away from anything google considers shady. Otherwise rely on word of mouth so to speak.

I wrote an entire blog post outlining the other determining factors and I think your readers might be interested in it.

I know many people are puzzled, upset and even a few happy with their ranks, hopefully this helps them next time out of the box. I know I was awarded a PR3. I see this mostly due to daily posting and major traffic from google and msn search engines. I did have a meager 3200 backlinks give or take, but I honestly think the other factors can bring sites down. It would be interesting to Audit a group of sites that were rewarded lower than avg PR and the same for ones that were awarded above avg to see the difference. I honestly think this is something that you could make into a positive force.

Here’s to PR4 next update friend.

Mine goes up from PR1 to PR4, but as to how it affects anything, I don’t know yet.

Hopefully it will affect my search engines traffic, but some people say it may or it may not

if you are talking about the site you provided on form, then you have a pr 3 which is pretty good. Try to get more links from related sites with PR.

Hi Hugo,

my Page Rank sits on #4 for a year or so but I have noticed clear up and down changes deeper on pages. I have to improve a few things regarding PR rise that I learned about today. On my blog, which isn’t too old, the main home page wasn’t touched at all only posts got PR’s I think it could be for I made changes on robots.txt last week. *** Next update you might get better Page Rank than you had before!

Hey Hugo. Sorry to hear of the slight drop. I would not worry too much about that.

Congratulations on your PR :)

despite the drop i still got a PR, and that is better than nothing. I admit that having a PR3 these months was very profitable.

Ye, I have a blog that dropped from a 2 to a 1.

Then I also have a normal site that stayed a 3.

With the blog getting all the pages in the primary index, is more important to me than pumping up the home page.

What I changed on my robots.txt file?

To clear all unneeded I added to robots.txt this (to what I already had disabled like; pages, feeds, trackbacks, categories, tags, etc.):

Disallow: /articles/*?

Disallow: /articles/*.php$

Disallow: /articles/*.js$

Disallow: /articles/*.inc$

Disallow: /articles/*.css$

I tested ‘/articles’ and ‘/articles/’ my blog URLs against this file using Google Webmasters Tools and it went through fine. But of course I forgot to test this one: /articles/index.php !!!

So with the ‘/articles/*.php$’ I disabled my main blog page. Otherwise it would be good mainly for individual posts. Such a silly mistake :( but never mind it’ll be fixed. (So, don’t disallow *.php$ as I did.)
