Domain tasting, is a practice that many “domainers” use to check if a domain is profitable or not. Domain tasting gives the buyer a grace period of 5 days. If that period hasn’t ended, then we can ask for a refund and the domain is deleted.
This practice was originally intended to protect buyers from misspelling domain registrations, but it has been used to check if a domain has traffic in order to park it and earn revenue from that.
But it seems, that Domain tasting days are ending.
ICANN, following it’s meeting on 23 January, announced that will change the policy of domain registration.
ICANN deliberated that their fee of 20 cents per domain-year are now nonrefundable.
Here is a short excerpt from the meeting:
Whereas, the Board believes that the withdrawal of ICANN’s waiver of ICANN’s
non-refundable transaction fee to the deletion of names within the AGP will
substantially end the practice of abusing the AGP;THEREFORE, the Board resolves (2008.01.04) to encourage ICANN’s budgetary process to
include fees for all domains added, including domains added during the AGP,
and encourages community discussion involved in developing the ICANN budget,
subject to both Board approval and registrar approval of this fee.A voice vote was taken of all Board Members present and the motion was approved by a vote of 13-0. Bruce Tonkin abstained from voting on this item.
This measure can take down the domain tasting. Dynadot is still offering the 5 day grace period.
