The adventure of making money online!

The USFreeAds Experiment - Is it really worth it?

Posted by admin On July - 22 - 2008

Usfreeads is a site that allows it’s members to get free classified ads, and has been around for 9 years now, and  i have seen tremendous buzz about it around the web since i started blogging, which was over a year now.

The buzz about usfreeads is how it will help a common user to make money placing classified ads. It seems that thousands of users are taking advantage of the supposed benevolent way google looks towards usfreeads pages. It seems, that a well written ad  will most likely to perform well on google search ranking. You can look around and you will see that many “praise the gods” and “worship” the service provided by them.

Well to me, all that is a bunch of crap even if it is true (don’t take me wrong :p). The only thing the reviews made me do is to try it out for myself. Check the results of my experiences (yes another experience) and see if a common guy, with no special skills like me can make something positive out of this. So about 3 months ago a registered for a free account to give it a try round.

Ok, the first obstacle i found was the free account. It totally sucked. You were only allowed to make 2 ads, with no html, images or links to the product you want to sell!!! Point being: They want you to buy a premium membership. So free ads my ass (pardon my french lol).

I even bother to try and write an ad with this circunstances. Total waste of time, it wouldn’t bring me nothing extraordinary and in the end it was rejected. So i left my account getting dust until i could get some time to experiment. So today i subscribed the premium membership with one week free trial. After that, it will be $9.99/month.There is also a gold membership for only $10/year but to say the truth, if you see what premium gives and what gold gives, you will choose premium.

Ok, the tools are set, and i just need to choose some products and write some ads. I think my experiment will last a month, probably more and the success or failure will depend on the amount of ads i write, the quality of them and off course on how good usfreeads perfoms on delivering targeted traffic.

So the experiment will involve two types of money making programs:

1- My newest Bans Store. One that i have put more time to develop and the first one that i can call a real store. The other one were just “experiments” lol;

2- Affiliate programs from several CPA ad networks.

Now, do you want to try for yourself? Then just join Usfreeads and get a premium membership and i invite you to share your experiense here. (yes is is an affiliate link, im weak lol)

IF you want to see where this goes then subscribe my rss feed to keep easier to track the evolution process.

TinyMassive.com - Earn up tp $6 cpm

Posted by admin On July - 8 - 2008

TinyMassive is a new company, launched July 1st if im not mistaken. They are really new but they know what they are doing.

Tinymassive is a comparison shopping engine (CSE), similar to shoppingads and widgetbucks. It will show ads from several merchants, relevant  to your site in several typical ad formats. It will display a list with products from different merchants, and it allow you to compare prizes between them. Nothing new if you are used to shoppingads or widgetbucks.

You can sign as publisher and make money displaying their ads. You earn on a per click basis, up to 70% of the value paid to tinymassive.  So far i can’t tell how the cpc is, as i have no data to share.

What’s worth to mention is that they claim that a publisher can earn up to $6 CPM! This is really good compared to similar companies, but sadly,im sure this CPM rate is not for all users…

As usual in these kind of sites, they tend to value American and canadian traffic, although the PPC ad sare open to other countries so far.

Ok, but do the ads look good?

well, you be the judge:

In my opinion, the widget style is clean, simple, light and very web 2.0. You can rate the product, compare prices between merchants, and a very important aspect is the ability to read comments about the products displayed. I really enjoyed how the widget looks like.

This is a new company and this is the time to sign up and get some referrals. They pay you 10% of what your referrals make.

Go ahead and give Tinymassive a try. :)

Oh, btw. A peculiarity about the company is that it is owned by a group of women. And they all have experience in this area.

How to screw your adsense revenue

Posted by admin On July - 2 - 2008

If you have been following me for some time now, then you should have noticed that i am a guy that likes to experiment and commit mistakes.

It is how we learn right? At least that’s what i hope. lol

Well, i have a forum with over 1000 members and a very decent traffic count each day.

I am using Simple Machines to power the forum and i was using the version 1.1.4 with a great looking template with ads very well placed, specially the adsense link units.

The forum database was getting too much garbage because i installed many modifications for the forum, i try and then delete some of them. But the deletion usually doesn’t erase the database data inserted when installing the mod, so along these years the garbage was accumulating. And lately, i was receiving to much database errors for my taste. Fortunately only i could see them, but that was pissing me off so i decided it was time to get ride of the crap…

What have i done?

well, i could easily have just upgraded to the newest stable version of SMF (1.1.5), but i had a little itch compelling me to install SMF 2.0 Beta 3.1 Public.

Ok, now you can say “What was this guy smoking? Pot!?!” lol

It’s a risk to install a beta release on a production site (production meaning fully launched and active site), but as i am very comfortable installing, updating and modifying SMF and i had backups to help me in case of despair, and considering this i installed the beta version after doing the proper tables deletions to clean the junk.

Did a full install of SMF because the majority of the modifications weren’t compatible, template included!!! That is why my revenue from adsense was screwed.

I have to stick with the default template, because no one is making templates compatible with version 2.0 due to the fact that the template structure will be completely rewritten for the final release.

With the old template, i was getting around 15-20 clicks a day making me a nice revenue in the end of the day, but now, with the default template with the ads in the exact same place, my clicks fell to 1!!!

The SEO structure was also changed, and this can potentially have some impact on revenue because google is still crawling the new addresses and i have seen a decrease in traffic coming  from the big G.

This could be a concerning problem, but to say the truth, i don’t really care. Yes it is money that im not winning anymore, but i can use my forum to help develop an excellent piece of software by reporting any bugs found, and i was really looking forward to try the new options available in version 2.0, and it was well worth the risk i took. ;)

So, if you are performing very well with your smf forum don’t upgrade to version 2.0, unless you are still using the default template and you are comfortable as i am with SMF management.

The WorldWideWeb Blog

Posted by admin On June - 26 - 2008

Im in the middle of my work, but things are a bit quiet for the moment and i decided to take a moment and write a review that is due for some time now.

Today’s post will be a review about thewwwblog, which was a prize i recently sponsored at thenetfool’s outrageous contest.

Thewwwblog is run by Chetan Bhawani a dental student in India. He has a series of well established sites that go from dental and health issues to SEO and money making.

Thewwwblog is half year age. It was created on December 25, 2007. Christmas time! Nice date to start a blog. Maybe to work as a talisman? Judging by his feed count (152) i would say things are going great for him!

This blog covers several issues like SEO, social bookmarking, blogging tips and has some interesting posts in the case studies category, like Digitalpoint forums - A money maker for webmasters

The blog is well organized and has interesting posts, easy to read, which is very important, up to date and regular posts.

As you can see for yourself this is an active blog, not because of what i have mention in the previous paragraph, but because of the number of comments in each post, although this is a nofollow blog (Which i don«’t consider a negative aspect).

Recently, Chetan changed to blog template, that im not very fond of… It is better than the previous one, but to gray for my taste. There are better options around.

Other thing i would change is the banner at the top of the blog, probably an ad would be a better idea. Also, the in text ads color from Kontera make the readability poor in some places. Dark blue with a dark gray background don’t match.

TheNetFool’s interview

Posted by admin On June - 13 - 2008

have been thinking on doing some interviews for quite some time, but the lack of time delayed them a bit until this week. I have decided to start with one of my favourite bloggers, Jim from thenetfool.com blog, and for my joy he accepted it. :)

For those who don’t know Jim, he is a 18 year old finance student at Penn State University and he is the owner of thenetfool.com, a blog that shows you ways to make money online.

The Net Fool – Jim Regan Interview

First let me thank you Jim, for accepting this little interview. :)

Thanks for having me Hugo, the pleasure’s all mine!

How did you get into the “blogging adventure”, did you have any past experience?

Oh wow, you know… I think it was more based on reputation than anything else. Basically I was a dumb freshman in college looking for something interesting to talk about in a business interview. As I started out, I had intended for The Net Fool to be just a stock market blog, so that I would have something practical to demonstrate to potential interviewers how determined and hard-working I am in my studies. This soon got out of control and I expanded it to Stock Market / Sports Gambling / MMO. When it became too hard to keep up, I trimmed it to stocks and making money online, which is where I am today. No past experience in blogging involved, though I have been making money online with side ventures for about 5 years now.

What are your online incoming sources?
I like to keep a low profile so I don’t get tax audited because I’m really not making much in my opinion at this point. I made almost $800 last month, and the revenue is all outlined on my monthly “earnings call”… a fun little twist on the standard dull blog income report, where I basically act like I am a publically traded company releasing quarterly earnings. Private Advertising has really come on strong for me, and is just the kind of recurring income that I can see continuing to grow into the future. I don’t like to do too many sponsored posts, but those make up a decent percentage of my revenue as well. In addition, I have made and marketed eBooks in the past which I will typically earns hundreds off of every month. The “get paid to” (gpt) websites that I participate in have brought me revenue essentially for free from referring members that make the money for me (about $75/month). Other than that, I do some freelance web design here and then, usually making a decent profit from my work.

Besides thenetfool.com what other projects do you have in hand?
Funny you should ask. I am in the process of launching a major blog along with ten of my fellow Penn State stock market gods. I’m not going ot reveal too much as I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but we are trying to mirror the famous “seekingalpha.com” in providing a resource for learning about the stock market. With a lot of knowledgeable writers and a great marketer (haha), we should be well on our way to success.

One of the best investments you probably did was to buy a custom design to your blog which was one of important aspects of your blog’s success. Did you expect this impact with the new design?
Honestly no. I couldn’t. My blog had gone absolutely nowhere from October of 2007 to February of 2008 and I didn’t know what else to do. It was definitely the defining point for me, because my old design made me look like a landing page, definitely not an attractive blog. Now I’ve got the style that reflects my passion, and people have picked up on it. One thing that is always true, you can be as terrible a blogger as you want… but you’ll get traffic and respect if you have a sweet design. Write that down!

I think the stats from Alexa.com’s popular ranking service speak for themselves.

How much time do you spend each day, researching and writing for thenetfool.com?
I routinely spend about an hour each day coming up with a good idea, or researching an old thought, and two hours writing the post. Why? Because I’m a perfectionist… which is a blessing and a curse. The good news is that all my posts are elegant and easy to read. Everything is spaced precisely, but it doesn’t just come out this way. I usually write everything, edit it, then add images, then edit the text again to fit in the best possible way with the images. And of course, I edit all the images I use to make them smaller/optimized and matching with my color scheme. If you didn’t pick up on this already, I’m big on images… and I need them to work for me.

What is your main objective as a blogger?
My main objective as a blogger is reputation. This might sound a bit weird, as probably 98% of bloggers will say either money or education… which are both bad answers in my mind. It’s actually a little bit of both for me. If I could have a blog with 2,000 readers and be in debt, I wouldn’t be all that upset. I’m really all about creating a reputation and maintaining it. Once people start to know you, leverage usually comes easy… and it will be easier to make that money you’ve been seeking, or to educate those people you’ve been trying to teach in the long run.

How do you imagine yourself in 5 years?
My aspiration is to end up with a career on Wall Street. This is probably not well represented in the MMO blog world, since most of the bloggers think they can make their own money from their basement. I, on the other hand, prefer the corporate world. I really can’t see myself blogging in a basement all day… that would just kill me. I’ll probably still try and maintain a double life as an internet marketer, but I’ll be working my tail off 120+ hours a week to stay in the economic game.

Well, I’m sure that noobs and non noobs can learn with your example, can you give us an advice if someone wants to start blogging and make a decent buck doing it?
Well if you want to start blogging, I am just wrapping up an entire post series about “Creating A Blog” which I am going to compile into a nice eBook and give away for free on my website just for subscribing. Really all you need to do is find something you like, and run with it. The professionals will have you think that they can make successful blogs about anything they want… and I say that is a load of garbage. Most clever kids out there on the internet can make a website seem popular enough to “flip” on some innocent buyer who doesn’t know better than to buy an over-priced share of the web. This isn’t hard. But success comes only if you are a legitimately good writer. So why not take a writing course on top of this, and learn to articulate your thoughts in a clear and concise way. There’s got to be a balance between rambling on and on and on and on in your posts about nothing, and simply saying too little. Find the balance, learn how to make your blog in the first place (my guide), and you are set.

Finally, to all new visitor’s that may come to your blog, if you had to choose, what topics do you recommend them to read?
If you are interested in the stock market, you should check out my series of “best stocks for 2008” which is different for each sector of the market. I am actually doing fantastic with my picks, with some stocks like United Steel (NYSE: X) gaining 150%+ since I recommended them back in January. For you bloggers, definitely want to look at my “Make Money Online” posts (see the category on the right hand side?) and my “Creating A Blog” series which is more recent.

And oh yeah, you better show up as a subscriber with The Net Fool after this is posted. Don’t even try to squirm away to your John Chow’s and your Pro Blogger’s. Why? Because they’ve forgotten the number one rule of all that is making money online, whether you are trading stocks or selling popsicles, you’ve got to…. stay bullish on the net! :D
